Wave goodbye to the Princess of Candyfornia, because the new Queen of Couture has grown up – with a little help from her friends: Dolce & Gabbana, Chanel and Wes Gordon.
In a stark contrast to her candy-covered cartoon image of previous years, Katy Perry shows off an impressive couture wardrobe in her new music video, Unconditionally – written for her boyfriend, John Mayer. The song is the second official single released from KP’s new album, Prism, and here at Fashion North we’re seriously impressed with Katy’s new “grown up” image.
Once upon a time, the word “chic” and “Katy Perry” would never, ever be put in the same sentence (That’s not to say she isn’t stylish, we just don’t think a bra that shoots whipped cream would be the main feature on a couture catwalk). However, slowly but surely, KP has been weaning herself into her new couture wardrobe, donning a vintage Chanel chain belt and matching jewellery at the MTV EMAs recently. and wearing an array of gorgeous couture outfits during Paris Fashion Week last month.
It’s no secret that Katy Perry’s friendship with Chanel’s head designer, Karl Lagerfeld may have helped her along the way, as she is seen at the beginning of the Unconditionally video wearing a dainty white Chanel couture dress in the falling snow, with strings of pearls around her neck – much like Coco herself.
The video then continues to show Perry in a stunning A/W 2004 bottle green velvet Dolce & Gabbana dress, as she belts out her new single while dancers twirl around her. However, the best is yet to come, as KP brandishes a fiery red and gold brocade dress from designer Wes Gordon’s A/W13 ready-to-wear collection. She sets off the dress with a pair of Dolce and Gabbana statement cross earrings from the A/W13 shows. Are we jealous? Just a little.
So, it’s official. Katy Perry has moved on to the next chapter of her fairytale and her candy bra and daisy dukes have well and truly been pushed to the back of her (new couture) wardrobe. The tickets for her new Prismatic World Tour went on sale earlier this month and guess what? She’s coming to Newcastle!
If Unconditionally is anything to go by, we can’t wait to see what she wears on her tour.
