British High Street retailer, Marks and Spencer has upped its stakes in joining leading fashion houses with an AW14 menswear collection at London Fashion Week.
The brand, which sometimes unfairly, is every 60-year-olds one-stop shop for long johns and pyjamas, unveiled its new-look menswear range and has branched out with a menswear collection to rival the most suave Savile Row tailor.
The luxury ‘Best of British’ collection, which was shown at the Hospital Club in London, featured sophisticated yet cool jackets, gingham shirts and immaculate suits all made from premium fabrics with a hand finish.
Tony O’Connor, head of menswear design at the retail giant told the Sunday Times: “These are classic pieces mixed in a more contemporary way.”
O’Connor explained that British icons such as James Bond actor, Roger Moore and the infamous interviewer and journalist Sir David Frost were behind his inspiration in taking the classic swagger of a 1970’s gent and bringing it to the runway of 2014.
Obviously hoodies and trackies are out, in favour of a more a la Scott Disick vibe.
Perhaps it’s time to get yourself a cane, Boys!
“Its that underlying confidence in dressing well which has come back,” says O’Connor.
Smart and sharp, the daywear encapsulates the British gent yet remains contemporary and comfortable with each item working perfectly together. The rich tones of camel, chocolate brown and taupe bring a fun sense of warmth to the collection with oversized bow-ties bringing an element of un-silly fun.
The eveningwear was awash with rich fabrics of velvet and cashmere that lended itself to an eclectic David Gandy slash Beckham feel – which is never a bad thing, is it?
O’Connor gushes about his current muse, Mr Pixie Lott, Oliver Cheshire saying: “He captures that London elegance,” and goes on to say that the chiseled jawed model is ‘The Boy.’
The collection is popular with celebs too, with Gary Barlow choosing to wear one of the Best of British suits on the X Factor (Instagram image above).
So from 70’s icons to the modern day stylish gent – we reckon M&S have got it wrapped up!
The new collection isn’t available until October but the previous season’s is still available online for men and women. M&S also has stores in Newcastle, Gateshead and Sunderland.
