She also sat front row in two Chanel shows in 2014 and wore a couture Chanel outfit.

But Rihanna has had her fair share of controversial fashion moments, such as this one in Amsterdam...
Rihanna is a role model, so must she always be in her bra and pants? This shot was from her tour in 2011.
If you're Rihanna, you don't need a top, right? Rih definitely followed this rule for the American Music Awards 2013.

Rihanna wore her raunchiest ensemble yet for the Barbados Carnival 2013. It was so barely there you couldn't even call it an outfit.

Known for her daring and often racy outfits, singer Rihanna is to be awarded by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), with the Fashion Icon award this year.

“We are proud to present Rihanna with the CFDA Fashion Icon award for her impact on the industry as fashion’s most exciting ambassador in recent memory” said Steven Kolb, CEO of the CFDA.

But does the risqué singer, who was asked to leave a mosque for disrespectfully posing for a photo shoot as she was seen as too racy for the religious site and who was also kicked out of a farmer’s field in Ireland after being told to cover up whilst shooting a music video, really deserve the award?

Announced as the face of Balmain back in 2013, and attending many Paris fashion week shows such as Chanel, Dior, Stella McCartney  and Lanvin and endorsing and modelling for many brands, Rihanna has had her fair share of fashion coverage.

The model is also known for her successful clothing line at High Street store River Island, so is it really such a surprise that she has been crowned fashion icon of the year? There is much debate around this subject and we still aren’t entirely convinced.

The star reportedly said: “It’s not all down to my voice. There’s people with way more talent than I when it comes to singing. Bigger voices. But people want to know who you are.  Fashion is a clear indication, a way to express your attitude, your mood”.

Some names of previous winners of the award are Kate Moss, Lady Gaga, Nicole Kidman and Iman. Does she really match up to their fashion expertise and style?
