The Met Gala: Who Got It Right And Who Got It SO Wrong?

Sienna Miller kept it simple in Burberry Prorsum.
Emma Watson dared in Prabal Gurung.
Rooney Mara looked gorgeous in Givenchy Haute Couture.
SJP went a bit overboard in Giles
Miley Cyrus wore a Marc Jacobs netted gown but made all the attention focus on her bad spikey hair 'do.

Awards season may see hundreds of gowns parade down the red carpet, but it is the Costume Institute Gala, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY, that is the epitome of glamorous event dressing.

Anna Wintour, the hostess with the most-ess, welcomed guests last night who have paid $25,000 a ticket to the annual event, celebrating a spectacular fashion icon or era.

The confusing theme did not disappoint this year – oh how we love to see celebrities squirm.

Following on from last years not quite so successful punk theme, it was decided as 1950s, old school Hollywood Glamour, in honour of the late British-born couturier, Charles James.

‘White tie and decorations’ to be precise, and what the hell exactly does that mean I hear you shout?

Well, think the ‘New Look’ of Dior in the 1950s when women accentuated their wasp waists, billowed at the hips and were dripping in the finest Bulgari jewels. And for the men, it’s all about looking crisp with perfect cufflinks, handkerchiefs and the most sparking of shoes.

So let’s see who grasped the theme in the clutch of their white satin gloves and who let it slip as low as the lapel’s the men should have been wearing…

BEST DRESSED

1) Kendall Jenner

You cannot look in any magazine or scroll through any website without catching a glimpse of the eldest Jenner sister.

After walking the FW catwalks in February, the model, designer and reality star has been in high demand. The most spectacular thing about this outfit, aside from her mermaid-like enviable figure, is that this dress is Topshop! Let’s hope they will be stocking that in our local stores next week.

2) Emmy Rossum

The 27-year-old actress wowed in a canary yellow, floral, Carolina Herrera gown. With the perfect structure, what set this dress apart on the red caret steps of the museum was the colour. Hollywood elegance is often reserved to satin black or white, but this dress took a modern twist on the theme.

3) Karolina Kurkova

The joint first place winner, we can’t see how well she sat down/moved for that matter. But this dress was the perfect tribute to Charles James the man donned ‘The First American Couturier’. The way the Marchesa dress sits so upright and rigid while still remaining feminine, is testimony to the beauty of Karolina. Plus maybe the fact she is wearing over $1million worth of Harry Winston jewels!

4) Dita Von Teese

Often not thought of as the most glamorous of actresses, more comfortable in a corset and a pair of stockings but Dita looked uber glam in a Zac Posen champagne and scarlett gown. The fish tail was the most amazing one we saw all night!

5) Sarah Jessica Parker

Our other joint winner, the Queen of bringing sex to the city! As SJP was one of the first to arrive she set the bar very high in a classic Oscar De La Renta dress, and as co-chair undoubtedly hit the theme perfectly.

The way the black bodice, flowered over the champagne coloured skirt and trailed down the back, finished off with a bold red signature of the designer looked like a starlet straight out of the 1950s.

6) BOTH Beckham’s

After celebrating both their birthday’s in the past week, the Beckham’s have been looking more lived up than ever, us? Jealous? Noooo.

It is not often that a couple both hit the theme bang on, but they both looked crisp in matching white outfits, VB of course wearing herself and DB in a white Ralph Lauren tuxedo. Both doing it perfectly for the Brits!

WORST DRESSED

1) Sandra Lee

Is that a person hiding under her hips? Oh no, that would just be masses of tulle. It is all about billowing in the right places and the 47-year-old television chef, in a Dara Lamb dress, was definitely billowing in all the wrong places. The colour also looked cheap as it shone underneath the paparazzi lights.

2) Chloe Moretz

There is just so much going on in this Chanel gown. A high colared neck? No. Having the shoulders covered? No. A dropped waist and a belted waist? No. Sorry, but this time the 17-year-old actress should have left it to the red carpet professionals.

3) Rita Ora

Leaving her beau at home, took to the red carpet in a bondage-style DKNY dress. The British singer may have looked fab, especially the gold leaf that ran down her parting but old school glamour it was not. The glittered satin tape wrapped around her arm? Well your guess is as good as ours!

4) Alexa Chung

Sorry, wait while I just pick my head up from SNOOZING on the keyboard at this dress. The boring, powder-blue satin dress was unflattering and a massive disappointment from Nina Ricci. Thank god we had the Beckham’s there to pick up the slack for the rest of the Brits!

5) Lupita Nyong’o

And we all thought this woman could do no wrong after awards season, but earth to Lupita the theme was 1950’s glamour not 1920’s flapper! The intricately embellished Prada dress, was a fine piece of design but the feathers, emerald jewels and headband were just SO wrong for this event!
