Football meets fashion: Red and white trends

Football may excite you or simply bore you to tears but there’s no escaping one of the North East’s biggest rivalries in history returning very soon.

This Sunday, October 25, will see Sunderland AFC and Newcastle United FC compete once again at the Stadium of Light and here at the University of Sunderland, we try to support our favourite city any way possible.

We know a lot of people reading this will absolutely love the thrill of a good Derby day – especially if your team wins – and we all know the rest of you basically can’t stand it.

But whatever you’re doing this Sunday; whether you’re stepping foot inside the stadium, sitting on the edge of your seat in front of your TV in anticipation or simply being blissfully ignorant towards the whole thing, for once we are following the crowd and channelling our red and white stripes thanks to a little help from the A/W15 runways.

Red is reigning this season and looks effortless paired with white thanks to the likes of Hermes, Ralph Lauren and Karl Lagerfeld’s Fendi, so there is no reason why you can’t sport Sunderland’s colours this weekend.

Whatever your style, have a look at our top picks of the best red and white pieces below from the high street to get into the spirit of one of the North East’s most famous traditions.
