LFW AW17: J.W. Anderson

J.W. Anderson’s deconstructed utilitarian style once again does not fail to impress.

The AW17 Womenswear show by J.W. Anderson took influence from exotic military styling. Harlem overalls were prominent in an array of natural colours such as black and stone. The use of balloon hemmed skirts, zip detailing on dress necklines and knee-high black suede boots further reinforced this. Exotic feathers were attached to the hemlines of balloon hemmed skirts creating new and unusual silhouettes on the J.W. Anderson runway.

Silver and gold metallics dominated the runway with multiple looks featuring metallic foil fabrics or sequin embellishment. Many garments were cut asymmetrically, a style often favoured by J.W. The Northern Irish designer continues to follow the androgynous looks for which namesake brand has become known for.

J.W. Anderson also continued the growing trend of athleisure. Both cowl and mock cowl necklines were very prominent in the designer’s collection. Longline slouchy, jersey sweatshirts, slit at the side to reveal the waist featured a mock cowl neckline. Paired with a bell-sleeved, deconstructed black leather jacket cut just below the breast, Anderson hinted towards layering being massive for the upcoming season. Further reinforcing this was his layered, brown, silver metallic and black leather skirt which had an almost cavewoman feel due to the jagged cut.

High top trainers were, without doubt, the IT item from J.W. Anderson’s show with almost every look being finished off with a pair.

Fur, suede, shearling and exotic leathers all made their way onto the J.W. Anderson catwalk. Full-length fur coats and fur chubbies were layered over oversized shirt dresses with gathered balloon hemlines, grasped at the waist by snakeskin brown leather belts. Grey shearling asymmetrical capes were layered over co-ord thigh-split skirts.

Baroque leaf prints in striking crimson and navy also appeared on the J.W. Anderson runway which brought colour and an exciting change of pace to the previously muted coloured runway.

Jewellery was kept to a minimum, with the exception of a single ear cuff in the shape of flowers and butterflies. J.W. Anderson continued his use of the ‘nosering’ buckle made famous by the Pierce bag.

Alexa Chung sat front row wearing a J.W. Anderson cotton summer dress layered with a black overcoat and sheer tights.
