The Sun FM Style Awards took place last Friday (26 September) at the Roker Hotel, and we couldn’t help but find the most stylish people in the room.

From Miss Sunderland to Faye Tozer, we were spoilt for choice but here’s a little bit more about our most stylish and what they think about fashion in the North East.

Natasha Phelps, 18 (Miss Sunderland)

“I chose this outfit because I love lace and sparkles, I thought it was a perfect dress to fit the role of Miss Sunderland. I think style is so diverse with what we wear and culturally, with women like Cheryl Ann Fernandez-Versini coming from the North East, she helps set a trend for women to stand out and thats what I want to do.

Tori Haig Scott, 31 hairdresser

“I chose this dress because I thought it was perfect for an award ceremony to stand, it turns heads, it’s from Jovaisa in Topshop. I think fashion in the North East is very open minded, a lot of people don’t mind trying something different to stand out and not fit this look the north has been labelled with.”

Sarah Hume, 18

“My outfit is from Rhianna’s range at River Island, I love a tailoring sort of style and this outfit was perfect for the award ceremony, it’s quite subtle because I like to focus on my hair as it is sort of a focal point of what I wear. The fashion in the North East is odd, sometimes you get people who like to be copycats. I think London is so signature people in the North are often forgotten about, so when someone does stand out it is really nice to see and you notice them.”

Stella McCarthy, 20, hairdresser

“My dress is from Topshop, it’s is easy to wear and comfortable but still looks formal. My necklace is from Primark, it was a bargain and looks much more expensive than it was. I think in the North East is fun and individual.”

Faye Tozer, singer

“My dress is from All Saints, my shoes are my trusty Kurt Geiger’s they’re so comfy I feel like I could run home and do the splits in them, my bag is vintage and my necklace is from Cara after a trip to New York. I’m wearing Asda lipstick which I’m really embarrassed to admit! But I love it, I can’t find another shade like it and I can just grab it when I’m doing my food shop. I love the style in the North East, after travelling around the world you see a lot of chain shops but the North East have a great vintage scene. Newcastle has always been great for vintage clothing but Sunderland is definitely catching them up. I also think it’s really important to support university students as they have so many great designs.”

Hollie Coxon, 25, creative learning manager at Sunderland Empire

“My dress and shoes are from Debenhams, my dress was a bargain in the sale, my headband is from Accesorize. I think people in the North East are confident about their style express themselves in their clothing. You used to only see this in Newcastle but I think it’s filtering through to Sunderland now thanks to independent stores.”

Victoria Brown, 29, hairdresser

“My dress is from Rihanna’s range at River Island, my shoes are also River Island and my necklace is Pandora. I think the North East has a really individual style compared to the rest of the country, people aren’t scared to experiment with clothes.”
