‘Mirror mirror on the wall’ was the mantra for Maria Grazia Chiuri fall/winter collection, filmed in the Palace of Versailles’ Hall of Mirrors, the digital runway was full of layered tulle gowns fit for every princess. The latest collection titled Disturbing Beauty was choreographed by Sharon Eyal with the film depicting Chiuri’s world of fairytales and her own interpretation of the women in those stories.
The collection unveiled on International Women’s Day is a nod to everything Maria Grazia Chiuri is about, from her 2017 “We should all be feminist” campaign she has taken the brand on a female empowerment journey and this season was no different.
The collection described on their Instagram page as “classic black and white are infused with a potent sense of symbolism drawn from the disquieting world of early fairy tales. The innocence of Broderie Anglaise detailing belies the windows it opens to the body beneath, a disconnect echoed in lacy white socks paired with boots that have an almost sensual lacing.”
Dior’s signature Bar jacket was redesigned in the House’s signature Cannage motif with reimagined toy soldier uniforms and puffed sleeve school girl white dresses we’re fitted with black leather laser cut heart pinafore channelling Alice in Wonderland. The school-like silhouettes were styled with a satin headband, black broderie Anglaise pinafores, and white knee-length socks.
The collection combined strong shapes of tailored coats, shirting and pinafores and even a red hooded cape signalling to Little Red Riding Hood was a look ready for the Big Bad Wolf.
Roses were seen repeatedly through the collection, appearing as a corsage on the waist of a navy blue gown and across a black and white gown. Headscarves are the Dior accessory of the season, from floral prints to the classic Dior Monogram it is time to practice how to tie a headscarf in preparation for autumn.
The evening wear stood out, the finale was a series of girls wearing tulle gowns, a red tulle gown with a cut-out shape of a heart, and another in a blue gradient gown fitted with a trail.
