Last night (November 25), North East football stars took to the catwalk to raise a suggested total of £40,000 for a regional charity.
Members of Sunderland AFC’s first team took part in a glittering fashion show as part of “Fashion Strikes” at the Stadium of Light. The fundraising event had an “All that Jazz” theme and helped to raise money for the clubs official charity, The Foundation of Light.
Lesley Spuhler, Foundation of Light CEO, said: “Fashion Strikes is a key fixture in our fundraising calendar and something that everyone looks forward to”.
The annual event raised in excess of £40,000 for the charity, whose vital work helps more than 42 thousand people across the region and beyond every year.
Members of the first squad, including striker Steven Fletcher, Adam Johnson, Fabio Borini and Emanuele Giaccherini strutted their stuff alongside professional models.
The players that didn’t take part in the catwalk show hosted tables at the event, which also featured live entertainment and a special fundraising auction. Head Coach, Gus Poyet was also on hand to help raise the total.
Adam Johnson said: “I’ve taken part in Fashion Strikes before and I was delighted to be able to give my support to the event again. The Foundation of Light is such a fantastic charity and does so much great work across the region – it’s something every Sunderland fan should be very proud of.”
The youngsters that have benefited from the Foundation’s award-winning education and health programmes also told part in a special “kids fashion show.”
Guests were able to bid for a range of signed shirts, including signed shirts from Barcelona star Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-night holiday in Dubai and a festive feast prepared by a top chef.
Lesley Sphuler said: “This year’s event has been made possible thanks to the support of Sunderland AFC, the players, intu Metrocentre, 3663, Holler Watches, Porsche and Dunelm Glass and we thank them wholeheartedly for helping us to make a difference to the lives of so many young people and their families.”
