For our third styling challenge of MED257, we were tasked with creating three different looks using just one scarf! I brought an authentic Turkish silk scarf that I bought in Side, Antalya. It has a gorgeous bronze and teal contrast two toned effect, two of my favourite colours.
1.
My first attempt at this challenge, I played it safe, using the scarf as a belt-like accessory. I simply pleated the scarf to make it small enough to fit through the belt loops I my jeans and tied it in a knot, then fluffed out the loose ends which displayed the gold fringe trim. I like that it adds dimension and interest to an otherwise basic outfit. I would like to use this perhaps over a plain black maxi dress as I think it would look very elegant.
2.
For my second style, I lay the scarf over one shoulder, pulled each corner around my body until they met in the back, and tied a small knot. I love the one shoulder look and how flowy the ‘sleeve’ is, while the bodice is quite form-fitting. In future, I would style this with a wide black maxi skirt. I think this would be a beautiful traditional Middle Eastern look, maybe even something that my Turkish aunties would wear!
3.
Finally, I used my Nomination bracelet as a DIY gold hoop to create this bandeau style top. I like the idea of it but the scarf just wasn’t the right shape for what I had in mind. I think the bust looks nice and fits the body well, but the lower part is too bulky and looks slightly messy.
I enjoyed this session as it encouraged us to get our creative juices flowing and experiment with different possibilities, which in turn helped us to identify the strengths and weaknesses of using scarves as garments.
