Pillow Case DIY: How to Make a Stylish Skirt
Fashion North’s social media editor, Isabel Vadillo, proves that the perfect skirt can be made from something as simple as two pillow cases.
When your wardrobe starts to feel a bit limited, you end up getting creative with the most unexpected things. In a moment of outfit desperation, I found myself eyeing two pillowcases in my uni room and wondering if they could actually work as clothing. I layered one at the front and one at the back, and somehow they instantly formed a midi skirt. The result felt very summery and a little nostalgic, but still completely wearable. The floral print especially gives off strong Lizzie McGuire vibes, which adds a playful early-2000s feel to the whole outfit. Honestly, if I wore it out, you probably wouldn’t even realise it started life as a pair of pillowcases.

All I needed to put this together was a pair of shorts. I wore the shorts as a base, then tucked the top of each pillowcase into the waistband, one at the front and one at the back. That alone created the shape of a loose midi skirt. Because of the way it’s styled, you naturally end up with two high slits on either side of your legs. If you’d rather have a bit more coverage, you can just add a couple of safety pins to close the slits to whatever length feels comfortable. The real key to making this work is choosing a pillowcase with a pattern or colour you actually love. The floral one I used felt perfect and I believe really made the DIY look intentional rather than random.
