Power and Ruin

A game of chess where every move shifts the balance of power, ambition and elegance between two modern rivals, both controlled by their desperation for victory. Photographed by Isabel Vadillo.

The First Move:

Two ambitious men face one another in perfect symmetry, neither yet possessing power or victory. Everything rests in balance as the warm light catches the contrast of crisp white shirts and sombre black ties. The silence between them is controlled and beneath their composed expressions, ambition quietly sits. Each man is certain the triumph is his.

The Embodiment:

Completely personifying the game, the players become immersed in the board, feeling and making each move with a grand sense of intent. One embodies black, the other white, and it’s almost impossible to separate them from their investment in the game. They’re in too deep now, tied to it until one of them holds all the power.

The Unravelling:

As the game unfolds, the balance between the men begins to shift. The winning player embraces his power growing more composed and elevated in his calm authority. Opposite him, the other starts to unravel, his composure slips and powerless disarray creeps into him. The symmetry breaks, the dynamic tilts, and what once felt equal is now beyond recovery.

The Checkmate:

As the final move is made and the king is taken, the game collapses into total certainty, leaving the winner elevated in lavish control and clear authority, while the defeated player is reduced to a broken shell, stripped of power, glory, and respect, left disheveled and undone with nothing left but the ruin of loss.

With every victory comes a ruinous defeat, each as impossible to ignore as the other.
