Around the Clock: Styling Outfits for Day and Night

Fashion North’s social media editor, Isabel Vadillo, shares her expert take on day-to-night styling as she reveals how she’d curate two perfect looks.

At the moment, when I’m putting together a daytime outfit, my mind goes straight to the terribly cold temperatures we’ve been dealing with in the North East lately. Staying warm is non-negotiable, but so is looking put-together and stylishly cool. If I’m spending the day at a desk writing articles, practising shorthand, or attending lectures for uni, I want something comfy enough to sit in for hours, but that still makes me feel good. A look for the night has a whole different vibe. That’s when I lean into outfits that make me feel confident and pretty, swapping relaxed silhouettes for something a little more fitted and sometimes even slightly uncomfortable. Adding a pair of heels and seeing where the night takes me is a must, so the outfit needs to carry me from Wetherspoons pre-drinks to dancing at a club or heading out for a nice dinner.

1. A Comfy and Cosy Winter Look

My first outfit leans into the controversial double denim look, and I have to say, I absolutely love it… as long as the shades match! These baggy vintage Levi’s jeans are the perfect choice for a long uni day because they’re so comfortable it barely feels like I’m wearing denim. To keep that relaxed vibe going, I paired them with my Converse trainers which are the ideal shoe for my walk to uni. Also, the slight platform gives me that extra height I always appreciate. Moving up, I layered a fitted denim jacket that I found in a charity shop with a red and green tartan scarf. I actually stole this piece from my mam’s collection, and I’m yet to find a scarf so perfect. It’s soft, cosy in cold weather, and doesn’t leave fluff all over your clothes!

Growing up, I was always obsessed with collecting bags in every shape, size, and colour imaginable. That love clearly never left me because my Free People Baby Emerson Bag is basically the closest thing I have to a child (aside from my dog). I chose the shade ‘Greenery’ to add a pop of colour to my winter outfits. I love how well this tone pairs with the shades in my favourite scarf, but somehow it also works with everything else in my wardrobe. It’s unusual and playful in a way that makes it feel like it matches everything, because it really matches nothing.

2. Pink, Floral and Fun Night Look

For my night look, I kept things classic with the ultimate go-to formula: jeans and a nice top. By now, you’ve probably realised that I love vintage and second-hand finds, my wardrobe is bursting with them. I picked up these jeans from a stall in Durham Market Place almost four years ago, and I love them just as much now as I did the day I bought them. I paired these low-rise, bootcut Levi’s with a frilly, floral pink top from ASOS Reclaimed Vintage. I’m constantly drawn to this range because the pieces always feel unique and perfectly designed. This top is feminine and elegant but still has that fun night-out energy.

To tie in with my pink top, I used the sandwich method to style my heeled Mary Janes which are also in the prettiest shade of pink. I originally bought these for my sixth form prom, and they are genuinely the most comfortable heels I’ve ever owned, thanks to Next Forever Comfort. Mary Janes are such a sweet twist on the ballet flat trend that’s been everywhere for the past year or so. They have that same delicate and feminine feel but with a little more structure. This soft nude-pink shade goes perfectly with jeans for a more casual look, but they work just as well with a dress for something more formal.
