Our second weekly challenge, in MED257, was to comprise two outfits in our personal style, one for daytime wear and one nighttime. For me, I had to think outside the box, as in all honesty, my daytime outfits only ever consist of comfy joggers, a plain black long sleeve top and a nice biiiig hoodie – the bigger the better! But for the sake of fashion, here are my day and night outfits with a bit more pizzazz than a plain tracksuit.
Outfit 1: Day
For my day-time outfit, I concocted a toned-down version of the classic jeans-and-a-nice-top. These mid-rise wide leg jeans from Zara are actually the only pair I own because they are just so versatile and can be worn with almost anything. The fold-up hem adds just a touch of extra detail, and they sit at just the right length above my Doc Martens boots. I must admit I always opt for a black top when wearing something form fitting as I feel that they are the most flattering, so in this case I chose Primark’s ‘seamless supersoft gym vest’. Although it is labelled and sold as gym wear, the thickness of the fabric offers great support and really hugs the figure, which makes it look and feel good when wearing it. I see no harm in making the most out of clothing you buy, especially when it looks this great! To accessorise, and add some texture to the outfit, I paired a cream borg cross-body bag, also from Primark, with a matching bucket hat that I bought on Vinted. Overall, I love how simple but effective this look turned out and I would most likely wear it on the likes of a day trip with my family or friends.
Outfit 2: Night
I absolutely adore this embellished maxi dress from AllSaints. The external mesh layer features a sleeveless, round neck, boxy silhouette, covered in a tattoo style artwork comprised of safety pins, stars, moths, skulls and snakes in a gunmetal silver beading. Lying under it, a satin slip base that smoothly hugs the figure, giving the dress a quietly sexy rock-and-roll look, synonymous with AllSaints’ signature vibe. While I normally wouldn’t go for this silhouette, I was enamoured by the embellishments and I just had to try it on. I instantly fell in love, and it is now my go-to for any night out or formal event. Paired with black tights and chunky boots (Doc Martens), I feel this is a culturally enhanced rendition of the ‘little black dress’ that has historically been worn with such versatility.
BONUS: Day to Night
One thing about me is I will always look for a way to make things easier when it comes to fashioning with style and comfort. So I did have an outfit that I felt smoothly transitioned from day to night by only a few simple changes.
Pleated skirts are making their mark in young adult fashion, now more than a part of school uniform, but a versatile wardrobe staple that can be styled for the workplace or the bar. This stone grey mini skirt from Zara features an ever so subtle yet effective blue pinstripe. I paired this with a cream Primark loose knit oversized jumper to lighten the look, some black tights, and my trusty Doc Martens. I love how soft, but sophisticated this outfit is and not only that, but it’s comfortable and warm also. Perfect for a day in the office or a coffee shop study session!
In one swift change, this navy pinstripe button up corset top from Nutmeg perfectly mismatches that of the skirt and completely transforms the feel of the outfit. Weather permitting, just add a little black shoulder bag (and some sunnies for dramatic effect) and you’re ready for a post-shift night out! But we all know how deceptive British weather can be, so for an extra layer of warmth, Zara offers a co-ordinating bomber jacket to finish off the look.

This session was a great way to get us thinking about how different garments have different vibes and aesthetics. I loved putting together these looks, especially the last one!
