Durham Lumiere light festival commissioned by Durham County Council, returns on November 12 for the sixth year running in the city centre for an exclusive four nights.
The Lumiere is a ticketing event and will be in place between the busy hours of 4:30pm – 7:30pm to access the city centre. This is to ensure that everyone is able to have an enjoyable experience at the festival, without the busy hustle and bustle of the Durham city shoppers and businesses.
There will be 30 artworks on display, including some of the most spectacular installations such as Fools Paradise by UK artist Novak, Complex Meshes by French artist Miguel Chevalier and Neon Bikes by UK artist Robyn Wright, with most located outside of the city centre. These particular attractions outside of the city centre do not entitle a ticket and can be visited between 4:30-11pm.
Helen Marriage, Artichoke director of the event said: “Lumiere is about transformation. It explores the possibilities of light as art, and how art can be used to change how people think about the city.
“I think the Artichoke team has managed to pull off something extraordinary – works by international artists made especially for the city sit alongside works made by and with local people. This is really a festival for everyone to enjoy – residents, visitors and artists alike.”
Due to the city being famed for its small roads and cobbled streets, drivers are advised to leave cars at home and travel by public transport, as diversions and delays are in place during the event times. There are various Park & Ride systems put in place, to ensure visitors a relaxed journey into the city centre. However for those insisting on bringing their own vehicles, certain car parks will be open and as easily accessible.
Tickets are free, and can be collected from the Gala Theatre and other Durham County Customer Access Points such as in Barnard Castle, Chester-Le-Street, Consett, Seaham and Stanley.
