Mental Health Matters: what a healthy 2021 means to us

By Holly Allton, Sorina Mihaila, Megan West and Chrysoula Axeli

This year has certainly been a tough one.  In these unprecedented times, we have to had to find the strength we didn’t know we had. Due to this, our mental health has taken the brunt of it all.  That’s why we are approaching 2021 in an optimistic way.  We have set ourselves new years resolutions that are unlike previous years as they are all centred on improving our mental health.

Fitness

Keeping active is more than just remaining body confident. Exercising regularly is proven to help your mindset too, as doing so releases endorphins.  Going for long runs along the beach and watching the world go by is guaranteed to clear your head of all worries and troubles. But if you’re more of a homebody, there is plenty of fun home workouts to do on YouTube.  Whichever way you choose to exercise, make sure it’s a choice rather than a chore.  You will then notice the benefits in your body and your mind.

Vulnerability

One of the lessons that we learned in 2020 was to not be afraid to be vulnerable. We have spent too much time of our life trying to cover up our emotions, but this challenging year has ruthlessly shown us how important it is to open up and express our feelings. In 2021, the main focus should be ourselves.  Instead of hiding behind a strong appearance, we should be brave enough to stay vulnerable, talk about our insecurities and connect with people emotionally.

Self-Care

Taking the time out of our busy schedules to indulge in some self-care is incredibly important.  Having these crucial ‘me time’ moments, can give you a break and a chance to shut off from the world.  It can also provide a time to reflect and remember to love yourself, which is something we sometimes forget to do. But loving and respecting yourself is the first and most necessary to step to acceptance and happiness.

Confidence

Confidence is key to survival in many different ways but going into a new year feeling confident gives you the ability and motivation to partake in all of the other elements of a positive mental health listed above. Not only that but being confident can help you to achieve other goals too, such as within your career and relationships with others. Being confident means being empowered too, which is something we all should be.
