Known as Valentino to most, he founded his fashion house in Rome, Italy, in 1959 with partner Giancarlo Giammetti. Since then, the fashion brand has been known and loved worldwide, dressing stars such as Jacqueline Kennedy, Elizabeth Taylor, Princess Diana and Julia Roberts.
One of the greats of 20th-century fashion, Valentino was known for creating designs that were glamourous, elegant, luxurious and romantic. His use of the striking shade of red that is now referred to as ‘Valentino Red’ was a key part of the brand’s identity. He was not only recognised as a legendary designer but as someone with impeccable personal style, he was always seen in his signature look of a suntan and a pristine suit.

Since retiring in 2007, after four decades of dominating the fashion industry, Valentino lived a quieter life but was not completely out of the spotlight. In 2016, he and business partner Giancarlo Giammetti started up the Valentino Garavani and Giancarlo Giammetti Foundation to support those in need and improve human welfare. And in 2023, he was honoured with the Outstanding Achievement Award at the British Fashion Awards.
Valentino’s legacy in fashion and philanthropy will never be forgotten, his designs and brand will live on forever, carrying his memory and artistry for generations to come.
