Savage x Fenty stuns us once again

“Storytelling is the last part of any journey”

Beginning mysteriously, we hear the voice of Rihanna in the form of a softly spoken monologue.  She then enters the frame, slowly, with her back to us.  We see glimpses of what she is wearing, a nod of what is to be showcased later.

Savage x Fenty shows are unlike the usual catwalk’s we see and have seen for many years.  It is more of performance, a display of art, powerful messages, and interpretation.

The designs of the collections are the main feature of the show obviously, but due to the high calibre of dancers, singers, and rappers, you do not have to be necessarily interested in fashion to enjoy this show.

Rihanna has always been an advocate for diversity and inclusivity so it’s no surprise to see that the models are all very different, from sizes, ethnicity and gender too.

What is unique to this show is that we have breaks of ‘talking head’ segments, and behind the scenes shots. This is incredibly interesting to be allowed an insight into what goes on underneath the surface of the show, from the original ideas and thoughts to the artistic process involved in designing.

A very empowering but also incredibly glamorous section of the show was when the models / dancers performed to N.E.R.D’s song ‘She Wants To Move’.  We also see our first celebrity appearance, from Demi Moore to Ru Paul’s Drag Race current reigning winner, Jaida Essence Hall, among many more.

What really took our breath away was the arrival of Normani, dressed head to toe in white, with a veil covering her face of which she flicks back passionately. The design of the lingerie is breath-takingly gorgeous, as are the others.

“Fashion is just an extension of expression”

Rihanna’s creativity is prominent throughout, and she talks us through her inspiration and reasoning behind her choices. She also speaks adoringly of the drag queen industry, and her belief of people being able to express themselves through the medium of fashion and beauty.

After starting as a mostly black and white, lace and leather theme, we start to see the introduction of colour slowly being revealed, from an all bright-blue to collection to eventually a collection of many different colours and fabrics in a tropical colourful set. I am in awe of this set, it is so magical, and it’s as if as nature meets fairy tales. It is beautiful and the best set shown in the entire show.  This is also where we see the first reveal of Rihanna in the actual show emerging from a blooming flower, in a glittering corset, with equally stunning accessories, including a boa of purple flowers draped over her arms.

The show continues with many more behind the scenes segments, and more eye-catching pieces and performances before ending with the whole cast together in an array of colour applauding Rihanna and each other on a successful show.

The Savage x Fenty Show Vol 2 aired on 2nd October 2020 as is available to stream now on Prime Video.
