The Fashion North team received another exclusive on copywriting with Hannah Boozer, who works as a Beauty Copywriter for nationwide business: The Fragrance Shop.

Hannah, 26, shared some incredible tips for starting and maintaining a successful career in copywriting as well as giving advice on travelling for opportunities, landing placements and ‘going the extra mile’ at job interviews.

After graduating from the University of Sunderland with her degree in Fashion Journalism, Hannah started chasing her dreams by moving to Manchester.

Originally from the South of England, Hannah is not shy of travelling and seeking opportunities outside of her home-town. She said during the masterclass:

‘Don’t be afraid to take a risk, but accept that is might not always work out the way you had intended.’

At the end of the day, it is all about your perspective. A loss is only a loss if you didn’t learn from the experience.

Her typical day of working-from-home entails: updating The Fragrance Shop blog, ‘Etc.‘ (view Hannah’s author page here); writing product descriptions for new fragrance launches; and measuring article/product success using analytical features.

‘Smelling all the perfumes we stock is my favourite part of my job! It has really opened me up to new scents other than my go-to Chanel perfume.’

This is definitely a perk of the job, it must be nice to have the freedom to explore all the incredible scents from all the designer brands including Dior, Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent.

Hannah’s Top Tips:

Tip #1 Take Risks!

It’s always good to take a risk and get out of your comfort zone. This is also a great way to expand your horizons and continue to learn new things. Additionally, if you do not take a chance on something, how will you know whether it would have payed off?

Tip #2 Go the Extra Mile

Having something unique and “stand-out” that people remember you by will almost always work in your favour. An employer might have 50 interviews in a day but the one that they had with you is one that they remember because you did something nobody else did (make sure you are remembered for a good thing though!).

Share your interests and something that you are proud of which also shows off your skill-set. Hannah said she brought along her magazine which she created for her final project at university to the interview where she earned herself her current position at The Fragrance Shop.

A little bit of effort goes a long way.

Tip #3 Put Yourself Out There

When travelling it is always a good idea to start involving yourself in groups and attending events with other people from the area. This is a great way to meet people in your new city outside of work and make yourself feel more at home.

‘Do things you wouldn’t usually feel comfortable doing. I went out and joined a running club when I first moved to Manchester.’

You may even find a new hobby as well as a new group of friends. It’s definitely daunting but it will be worth it in the long run.

Tip #4 How to Copy-write

If you are unfamiliar with the job role, a copywriter is responsible for writing product descriptions which you may see online via a company website. We asked Hannah if it was difficult to describe something as complex as a scent, she said:

‘You really need to be creative and have a nose for smells. I always ask myself ‘what would I want to know’ when writing-up new descriptions.’
