Corsets are one of fashion’s most favoured garments – and still going strong in 2024.
Though the use of corsetry has changed through the centuries, the garment can still be found on fashion runways, in celebrity streetwear and throughout pop culture. Previously corsets were worn underneath clothing to suppress a woman and train the waist to make a woman thinner.
However, nowadays they do not have to be suppressive and can be used as an expression of femininity for both women and men now.
My moodboard takes a deeper look into the use of corsetry in music, specifically within the rock genre, as the fashion is often eccentric and exaggerated.
For a true rock ‘n’roll feel, corsets are worn over clothing, and feature fabrics like leather, leopard print and fur. Even men have been spotted donning a corset for a truly unique look.
The rock’n’roll look can be seen on icons such as Joan Jett, Motley Crue and Stevie Nicks who have all sported this gender non-conforming look since the 70s and 80s, showing the corset is something that doesn’t need to be hidden away under clothes.
