5 Chic Ways to Style Polka Dot Scarf

Fashion North’s social media editor, Isabel Vadillo, shares how she’d style one simple scarf in five different ways to match your mood.

Having a lightweight, sheer scarf in your wardrobe is an absolute game-changer, they are easy to wear, easy to style, and super adaptable. With just one accessory, you can completely transform a look from uninteresting to the complete opposite. Polka dots are my favourite trend at the moment, this playful and timeless print adds so much personality to any outfit. I think they’re here to stay… or at least they are in my wardrobe! For this styling challenge, I chose a red and white polka dot sheer scarf that I picked up at a charity shop for just 50p. Proof that you don’t need to spend a fortune to elevate your style.

Style 1:

The first way I styled the scarf was the classic option of loosely wrapping it around my neck. It’s a look I’ve been seeing everywhere on TikTok and Pinterest lately, this is how you know it’s worth experimenting with, so I had to try it for myself. Even though a sheer scarf won’t add much warmth, it instantly adds that effortless, put-together feel to an outfit. It’s perfect for spring and summer, layered over a simple vest and a lightweight jacket.

Style 2:

The second way I styled the scarf was as a hood by draping it over my head, letting it fall over my shoulders. This look instantly gave that chic, vintage-inspired feel, the kind of look that makes you feel like you’re strolling through the streets of a European city with a film camera in hand. Add a pair of oversized sunglasses and you’ve nailed the babushka moment. There’s something about scarves that just radiate unavoidably cool energy.

Style 3:

The third way I styled the scarf was as a shawl over my shoulders. This is the ideal styling trick to protect your skin from sunburn on those surprisingly hot British summer days, especially if you’re prone to that red-shoulder glow. And if you’re more of a tanner, it’s perfect for preventing stubborn strappy tan lines from vests and camis. This look adds that little bit of extra coverage on a warm day without feeling heavy or overheated.

Style 4:

The fourth way I styled the scarf is a true classic, giving major Olsen Twins energy with that 90s and early 2000s vibe. For this look, I threaded the scarf through the belt loops of my jeans and tied it at the side to create a cute fabric belt. Adding a statement belt can completely transform an outfit, so why not make use of that versatile scarf you’ve probably been underestimating for years? It instantly adds personality, colour, and a touch of nostalgia. I’ll definitely be styling mine like this all year round.

Style 5:

The final way I styled the scarf is quite similar to the first, but instead of wrapping it around my neck, I threw it over each shoulder for the ultimate back moment. It feels instantly more refined, but with a touch of drama. This styling option could easily work for a more formal look too, especially if you match the scarf to your dress. Even without the dressy vibe, though, it’s such a chic twist on a classic. It stands out from the usual ways you see scarves styled everywhere, and who doesn’t love feeling unique?
