How to do Halloween more sustainably

The scariest part about Halloween isn’t people walking around in masks or watching horror films at midinight, it’s how much single use plastic people use during this time and don’t recycle.

Each year in the UK, seven millions costumes are disgarded!

So in honour of spooky season, here are some ways you can stay sustainable this October.

  • Costume Repeat!!

You don’t need to be spending lots of money each year for something your gonna wear ones then chuck away, Or any money at all, there is no harm in wearing last years, or the year before that (unless your one of the millions that seem to digarded them).

And in the words of Lizzie McGuire: “Maybe I’m an outfit repeater, but your an outfit rememberer which is just as pathetic”

  • Borrow from your friends

If you don’t have last years or you don’t want to repeat the costume you wore last year, I’m sure your bestie won’t mind lending you theirs.

  • Save your money for drinks and get it secondhand!

This time of year charity shops are filled with costumes, and if you can’t find one you like, look on the likes of Vinted and Depop and you’re sorted.

  • Shop your own wardrobe

Arguably the most fashionable thing you can do for Halloween is put togehther an outfit from your own wardrobe, if you look hard enough you will be able to put together something cool.

Costumes inspiration using my own wardrobe:

With the recent release of Prime Video’s adaptation of Stephen King’s horror classic, Carrie, I think it’s safe to say this will be a popular costume choice this year. This costume is pretty easy to put together, all you will need is:

  • A pink dress
  • tiara
  • prom queen sachet
  • a bouquet of flowers (optional)

To me the most important and telling part of any Carrie White costume is the makeup from the iconic scene where Carrie gets pigs blood dumped over her after she is crowned prom queen.

PSA: Don’t get the fake blood on the dress, it will be a nightmare to get out!

I will be suprised if no one dresses up as the queen of summer, Zara Larsson.

For this costume, Vinted will be your bestie. All you need to do is type her name into the search and you will find hundreds of items that scream Midnight Sun.

For this costume you could wear:

  • Sparkly mini skirt
  • Colourful crop trop/ bralette
  • Hibiscus flower jewellery
  • Spray painted tshirt (DIY it)

And much like Carrie, the most important part of this costume will be the iconic makeup, and lucky for you Sophia Sinot, Zara’s makeup artists, is not short of amazing looks for you to take inspiration for on her Instagram.

This could also be perfect to do as a duo costume, with PinkPantheress. You could recreate on of the many iconic looks from the Stateside music video.
