With home being the safest place for everyone right now, it isn’t surprising that many of us feel like we are stuck inside a never-ending loop of a less glamorous version of Love Island. When we aren’t changing out of one set of pyjamas into another, we are getting all glammed up to lounge around the sitting room or come down for dinner. While it might be good for the decreasing amount of laundry I have to do, there is no doubt that lockdown has changed my style completely.
It is in these times of disorder that I often turn to the words of people smarter than me, and now more than ever I think the world needs reminding of the wisdom that is the movie Clueless:
“Cher’s main thrill in life is a makeover. It gives her a sense of control in a world full of chaos.”
I think we can all agree that Dionne’s wise words have never been truer.
We all know that a change is as good as a holiday, so now is the perfect time to be experimenting with and refining our style. Plus, it doesn’t look like any of us are getting the chance to go on our summer adventures as planned, so this is the next best thing.
After going through my own wardrobe, while I didn’t get rid of much, I discovered a hoard of unfamiliar clothes. Crammed onto the racks, they had been wiped from my memory by bags of online shopping that I’m reluctant to admit I forgot to return in time, and now lie desolate on the floor of my cupboard. Even just going through these items sparked ideas for new outfits that I could wear on the concrete catwalk during my highly anticipated dog walk of the day. Plus, it’s also a great time to just check that my jeans still fit.
While the only people who will see my choice of clothing are my parents and dog, I am still trying to make sure items match and complement each other. Through my own lockdown boredom, I have found myself picking up an old hobby of making my own garments. Even with limited resources, I have been using scraps of fabric around the house to make accessories to add a pop of colour to an outfit or even just to bring out a lesser colour from a piece of clothing. As always, YouTube videos have been a god send in providing a bit of guidance in refreshing my skills of making scrunchies, headbands and more. I’ve even had to the time to expand into soft furnishings such as cushions.
I think all of us have adopted a new comfier sense of style in the recent weeks, to the point where it will be hard to retire my sports leggings, jogging bottoms and sweatshirts when this is all over, without experiencing mild withdrawal symptoms. Paired with a bare face and messy bun, the lockdown look is a simpler and more relaxed pace of life.
