Christmas in the North East: How to keep warm this festive season

With Christmas adverts on the TV and the Fenwick’s window display unveiled, it is hard to deny the fact that the festive season is very much upon us.

Here in the North East, Christmas decorations appearing in the region’s cities, towns and villages can only mean one thing, it’s that time of year again.

From Christmas light switch ons to Christmas markets, it’s all happening and while it may be fun exploring the traditional wooden stalls and admiring the seasonal greenery, it’s also important to keep warm and safe this winter.

As the cold nights are fast approaching, we here at Fashion North have put together a few tips and tricks that will help you stay warm during the festivities.

1. Don’t be afraid to layer up.

Layering is always a go-to trend during the winter season and for good reason too. Not only is it a practical way to dress when it’s cold, it’s also a great way to create insulation. So, try to avoid shying away from layering up. A vest top, under a t-shirt, under a thick knit jumper will keep you warm but don’t be too quick to write something off. You may be thinking your ripped jeans are a no-go area but this is where you can get creative by throwing on a pair of tights first to conceal any tears. For those extra cold nights, a pair of leggings or even long johns would be suitable too.

2. Belts are not just for jeans.

When it comes to belts, we all own one and often use them to hold up our jeans but have you ever considered using this staple item in a different way? Add new life and vibrancy to your winter coat by simply placing a belt around the waist. This is known as waist cinching and it’s a cheap and cheerful way to give old clothing a new shape. Plus, with temperatures dropping in the North East, it’s inevitable that the cold winds will make an appearance at some point making this a great hack for keeping the heat in and the breeze at bay.

3. Keep a hand warmer in your handbag.

Carrying portable heat sources is a great way to ensure you have a backup plan when gloves just aren’t cutting it and you’re struggling to stay warm. Easy to use, hand warmers are perfect for slipping into your pockets when an instant heat boost is needed. Other items, such as flasks and travel mugs, are perfect for storing tea or soup and can also be used to provide warmth from the inside out whilst on the go.

4. Cover your head, hands and feet.

We’ve all heard that heat escapes through the head, hands and feet first. When outside, prioritise keeping these areas covered using hats, scarfs, gloves, socks and boots. If you’re not a hat person, earmuffs are a perfect alternative. It’s also best to ensure that each item is waterproof as these areas feel the wet and cold the most.

5. Take a hot shower or bath.

Whilst it’s important to stay warm during the Christmas events, it’s also essential to keep an eye on your temperature at the end of the day. Taking a warm shower or bath once you get home is not only a great way to relax, it’s also a quick and easy fix to retaining heat. Wrap up in a fuzzy dressing gown and fluffy slippers afterwards to kickstart a cosy, well deserved rest.
