Cool or cringe? Will new Xmas ad save Marks and Spencer?

The new Marks and Spencer Christmas advert has dropped – and it’s not their usual festive feelgood style.

In the week when it was revealed the high street chain’s profits had plummeted, this year’s Chrimbo commercial seems to be a blatant ploy to attract much-needed younger customers by using a dance track and straight-up silly dance moves in attempt to go viral.

House of Pain’s 1992 track Jump Around was selected as the backing-track for the advert for various models dancing around in M&S jumpers (get it?)

Marks and Spencer are widely recognised for their delicious food selection. However, when customers discuss the clothing offer, words like ‘granny’ and ‘out-dated’ are used to describe the store.

The 135-year-old company are already closing over 100 stores nationwide and brought in Holly Willoughby to promote some of their clothing range in a bid to improve sales.

Fashion North hit the streets to ask students what they thought of the ad and whether it had the desired effect, making them wish to purchase any of the JUMP-ers in the video.

Students John Hoey, 20, and Jacob Hunter, 21, weren’t swayed. Watch what they have to say here.

Students Jamie Forrester, 22, and Kiana Reid, 20, still think it’s “horrible fashion, high prices” aimed at an older market.
