Corduroy Craze: How I Style an Outfit for University
Fashion North social media editor Isabel Vadillo talks about styling her personal wardrobe and how she forms the perfect outfit to spend a day at university.
When I piece together a look, I always consider the depth and layers of detail I can bring to an outfit. Texture plays a huge role in this, which is why I love corduroy. From corduroy Converse trainers to multiple pairs of jeans in this fabric, I own a lot of cord because I genuinely love wearing it.

For this shoot, I styled a cream corduroy jacket that I bought from Depop for £32. I love its detailed button features that give the piece so much character, and the early 2000s vintage feel. My jeans are also from Depop for £37, described as vintage low-rise bootcut Wrangler jeans in burgundy. While they’re said to be burgundy red, the corduroy sits over a blue base fabric, which gives them a subtle purple tone when worn. This hidden detail adds so much depth that is often complimented.

For years, my style has been inspired by 90s TV shows like Gilmore Girls and Friends. I love a low-rise jean moment reminiscent of the Gilmore Girls, paired with a more bohemian and chunky jewellery inspired by Phoebe from Friends. Most of my jewellery comes from charity shops, where you can find unique, one-of-a-kind pieces at incredibly affordable prices—these bangles were just 50p each.

My everyday shoes are Dr. Martens 1416 Quad Smooth Leather platform shoes in black, which retail for £170. As a shorter person (5ft 2), platform shoes have become an essential part of my wardrobe; they stop long jeans from dragging on the ground while also giving me a boost in height. I’ve worn these shoes almost every day for the past three years, I honestly couldn’t be without them.

To tie in with the black shoes, I styled a black long-sleeve top from GAP, £25, underneath my jacket. While I love incorporating pops of colour to my outfits, a neutral base like black really pulls everything together. This reliable, go-to black long sleeve is another wardrobe staple that I get so much wear out of.
