How will Anna do camp?: Met Gala 2019 theme announced

The theme for next year’s Met Gala has been announced as ‘camp: notes on fashion’, a play on the Susan Sontag essay from 1964.

There has been much debate since the announcement and the question we’re asking at Fashion North is: how will Anna Wintour do camp?

But what is camp fashion you ask? Basically, it’s the idea of something being regarded as “unappealing” and becoming ironically fashionable. Camp fashion, questions art and beauty and is viewed in such a way that it appears beautiful.

The idea is that nobody will ever interpret the style the same, which leaves us in a very vague place in predicting what celebrities will be wearing on the 2019 red carpet.

Anna Wintour, editor of Vogue and one of the world’s most respected fashion journalists, is known for her classic style and the Chanel sunglasses she never seems to take off.

Since she’s a strong businesswoman and a fashionista, there’s a chance she will follow the trend of women wearing suits and appear on the red carpet wearing trousers.

Or maybe if a suit is not quite Anna’s style, what about a floral jumpsuit? It’s modest, stylish maybe outside of Anna’s comfort zone. For Anna, exploring camp fashion and the idea of unappealing fashion could be the fashion moment we’ve all been waiting for, seeing Anna wearing something she’d never normally wear. Letting loose camp Anna could be the most iconic fashion moment of 2019 and here at Fashion North, our minds swirl with all the possibilities. If Anna wanted to take camp to the extreme the perfect person to talk to – although she’s fictional – would be Effie Trinket from the Hunger Games, who is known for her iconically camp style and eccentric personality.

But, Anna has a history of wearing a simple silhouette, so it’s likely she will opt for the same thing in 2019. By choosing a dress with rose embellished statement sleeves at the 2015 Met Gala; this was one of her more colourful looks over the last few years.

Despite her love of neutral colours like white, cream and subtle golds it would be great to see Anna wear more colour. In 2015, not only did she wear red but she also chose a statement sleeve – maybe this is the opportunity for Anna to do it again.

It’s fun to think about and what’s even better is interpreting the theme yourself. So we challenge you to create your own outfits and to show us what camp fashion means to you. Tweet us @Fashion_North with your pictures.
