Kylie Jenners Bedazzling Trend: Is this the end of minimalism?
After posting a bejewelled birthday cake, Kylie Jenner has started yet another social media trend. Now, every possession is being bedazzled, people are putting rhinestones on: face-masks, sunglasses, phones, jeans and even their bodies!
Is this just for social media popularity and clout or a serious fashion statement?
Are these gem stones the dazzling combat badges for the new whimsical style that’s been fighting back the minimalism fashion trend and enforcing a more playful tone with fashion? Perhaps minimalism has ran its course, Kylie Jenner seems to think so.

Personally, I think the gem stone trend was sparked by the pop ‘it’ girl, Zara Larsson. Her colourful maximalist aesthetic combines neon fabrics with multicoloured rhinestones and has been since her song ‘Midnight sun’ came out in 2025. Even Zara’s make-up artist, Sophia Sinot, bedazzles her make-up looks in ways never seen before.

The use of rhinestones dates back to the 18th century, where quartz pebbles taken from Rhine river were worn as jewellery. In the late 1800’s, the well known jeweller, Daniel Swarovski, made rhinestones chic by introducing machine-cut stones that were added to costumes and used as a frequent accessory to jazz up costumes. Rhinestones have been used over centuries to enhance fashion pieces, fashion icons such as Marilyn Monroe wore them for a dazzling effect on camera. Now, rhinestones are on everyday clothing, known and seen as a limitless fashion accessory.
In light of the bedazzling trend, you can expect to see gemstone covered garments being sold in stores before the end of this year. Brands such as Fashion nova and Jaded London have already produced bedazzled tops and dresses.

Here are some Fashion North examples of what is blowing up socials, all you need is £1 gemstone stickers and items you already own!
