Yellow fibreglass and concrete floors aren’t usually what you would expect to see at a high-fashion show, but somehow Prada made it work.

Visionary pieces of yellow and gold spun glass hung from the ceiling creating an interesting architectural atmosphere at the Prada SS16 show. With the audience perched on curved benches following the runway, the constructive set could only be an indication of the bold collection that was to come.

In three words: cosmic, abstract and stripes, is what instantly came to mind as the show opened, however there was so much more. The models wore detailed feminine suit jackets of monochromatic colours, which became brighter as the show went on.

Mostly in metallic shades of gold, silver and olive green, narrow lines were a clear theme as stripes appeared on many of the garments creating a unworldly eclectic collection from design director Fabio Zambernadi, in Miuccia Prada’s absence. Each piece was like a colourful candy sweet wrapper in yellows, oranges and greens, instead of the typical pink. From sheer organza rain macs, to latex striped suits, to shimmery pink boots the collection was out of this world.

Flapper inspired shapes became evident as the show went on as Charleston styles of long straight dresses came into play. With the rainbow of colours across the bodice adorned with cut-out plastic circles and art deco-like black panels across the hips, it became apparent that the collection was modern artists take on traditional fashions.

As for accessories the models wore 3D earrings that largely resembled disco balls, in colours varying from grey to lilac, which were also reflected on the shoes. They wore fishnet style chokers that draped from the neck down paired with small stripe handbags accentuated with crocodile skin.

The models’ hair and beauty was kept to a minimal so as not to take away too much attention from their oh-so-detailed regalia. However the game changer of the night was the gold lipstick. Think ‘My Parents Are Aliens’ crossed with Egyptian goddesses. Hair was neatly sleeked back into a low pony, with sweet fringes on gelled baby hairs.

Overall the show presented a newfound take on classic styles such as the tweed jackets and striped suits, each one showcased in an eclectic fashion, ready for the standout trends of Spring/Summer 2016.
