New York Fashion Week: Kate Spade New York spring summer 2016

Kate Spade’s Spring Summer 2016 collection was, indeed, a very summery affair. The poised models, with slicked back hair and fresh make-up, stood within a bed of colourful flowers, perfectly matching the pastel colours and floral prints of the clothes.

The brand is known for its cute designs but this collection was more grown-up, showcasing pretty, polished wearable looks and staple pieces. The classic white shirt was seen in its usual crisp style as well as with short sleeves, frills and a peter pan collar for a feminine twist. Lady-like demure dresses were paired with timeless trench coats and leather jackets.

Influenced by fifties glamour the dresses and skirts were full, midi-length and beautifully patterned – from yellow sunflower prints, to pink roses, to monochromatic stripes. Retro sunglasses, with cat-eyes and thick frames, also had a fifties edge.

Although the general feel of the collection was a little more sensible than usual Deborah Lloyd, the chief creative director, kept the accessories quirky and fun in true Kate Spade style. Every collection seems to have a novelty shaped wicker bag, and this time there was two! An adorable Dalmatian with red collar or an even more adorable smiling bee, complete with 3D wings. Bags shaped like a campervan, a vintage ticket and a carousel seemed to take inspiration from a favourite summer past time of being by the seaside.

Once again, a beautiful collection from this New York brand, leaving us wishing we could afford a spree in one of its stores.
