Fashion Product and Promotion students from the University of Sunderland are taking their future into their own hands by holding a stand-alone exhibition in London entitled Shine.
The third year students will be exhibiting their final major projects in the 5th Base Gallery near Brick Lane, London from Monday June 1- Thursday June 4.
Admission is free to Shine and it will be open from 12pm-8pm until Thursday with a private viewing between 5pm and 8pm on the Monday evening.
Viewers should expect a variety of creative work including product pieces such as garments and magazines, and promotional material like branding and point of sale.
Course leader Jill Kirkham said: “We know that we have a different kind of course and we felt that we needed a different kind of showcase to give our students the best chance to shine.
“I think it is really important to show in London as we are a northern university and the capital city is perceived as being the hub of the creative industry.
“This isn’t the end of the students’ career because they’ve finished their degree, if anything, it’s the start of it and this is where all their efforts should pay off.
“The gallery is close to the Graduate Fashion Week venue so we hope people in the area will drop in and take a look at our student’s hard work.”
Shine showcases an array of different directions that can be taken in the world of Fashion Product and Promotion.
Concepts such as menswear magazines, LED lights and their relationship with fabric and lingerie as body armour are just a few of the directions the students have explored.
The Fashion Product and Promotion course has produced many recent successful graduates including Tamzin Cummings, now an assistant buyer at Urban Outfitters, Caitlin Embleton who runs her own design label and website company, and Alex Filson who is an assistant merchandiser at Matalan head office.
Samantha Johnson, a current final year Fashion Product and Promotion student said: “I feel like by having our own stand-alone exhibition we are showing that Sunderland students can make their own successes and don’t have to rely on Graduate Fashion Week.
“I love how diverse this course has been and I have learned to not only construct a garment but also was taught digital skills, illustration and my favourite specialism, fashion photography.
“Through experimenting during this course in the studio I have found my love for fashion photography and know it is the path I wish to take in my career.”
