JP at the oceanic awards

JP, owner and proprietor of Johnathon Pickup Hair in Blandford Street Sunderland, has been cutting hair for decades and began as an apprentice for Tony & Guy. His reason for using these products are that he is vegan and has a family, understanding the diversities and often complexities of bringing up children.

JP’s journey with Curly Ellie happened two years ago during a trip to school with his daughter, by chance got chatting to director Andrew Austin from the brand. In the next few weeks, JP was introduced to Zaina O’ Halloran company director and her team and asked to do some work using the products.

“Obviously, it’s not for every client, its horses for courses. We don’t all have curly hair, but also some components that you use can cross over.”

Curly Ellie is a natural hair care brand founded by Zaina O’Halloran, created for her daughter Ellie, who struggled managing her curly hair and sensitive skin. Trading for 11 years, Curly Ellie trades with 40 plus countries, she has gained popularity not only with children, but adults too, its brands focus contains natural ingredients, no harsh chemicals or additives.

“The difference her products are making to my business are extensive, the products are flexible throughout the industry, not only used on curly hair. The trend for a more naturally balanced curly style is also far from its original look in the 80s. The products make the hair feel naturally balanced, no sticky coating and sulphate free too, smelling nice and fresh and something you can get a hold of.

“Being more sustainable is something that I am looking into, I like the brand, the ethos, I get a buzz from the whole thing, and I am always looking into products that will make a difference. My clients are coming back happier, and for me that’s a great feeling knowing that my care for the planet is having a positive impact on the way people look”

JP picks up another award 2025 from the Treatwell group

Recently JP attended the Northeast Beauty Industry Awards which were held at the Plaza Hotel in Newcastle.

“Prior to the ceremony I received an update on Facebook saying that I had been nominated, then a further notification saying that I had been shortlisted but ignored it at first.

“Then out of the blue I received a call, saying that the salon needed to nominate a candidate. I threw on a suit tarted up my hair and attended, having a very nice meal and a few drinks felt great until my name was announced for the award, I was speechless.

“I didn’t have a speech planned at all as I didn’t think I was going to win, I think its been the only time in my life when I was speechless.”
