With the month of October coming to an end- or in other words, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Rihanna’s Savage X Fenty lingerie label have been the latest brand to drop a campaign to drum up support for Breast Cancer awareness, and us at Fashion North have caught up with one of the boss ladies, Cayatanita.
The campaign focuses on Survivors and Thrivers, featuring three beautiful strong women who go by the names of Ericka, Cayatanita and Nykia. All three women have faced their own battles with an aggressive form of breast cancer. On top of the trauma of all this, they have faced another huge issue, the under-represented black community.

While going through their treatment, the women also faced the unfair disadvantage within the healthcare system due to their age and race. The new campaign is all about supporting and empowering others to come together. Focus is put upon the girls stories of how they overcame or dealt with their cancer to inspire others and raise awareness.
In an exclusive interview with Fashion North, one of the featured models Cayatanita, told us “I am going to strive and thrive and I am trying to light up the world one day at a time.” Cayatanita, who was diagnosed with breast cancer at 32 years old, seven years after her Cardiovascular diagnosis, is a true inspiration with her positivity and resilient attitude throughout her journey. Cayatanita started blogging in order to help her cope with the gruelling treatment. The 34 year olds strong approach to life is nothing short of inspiring, and we at Fashion North commend her for this. Cayatanita was featured in the campaign after appearing on the Savage X Fenty VOL.2 runway. You go girl!

I am eternally grateful for this experience” said Cayatanita reflecting upon her Savage X Fenty experience.

About the campaign, they said “We love the new Rihanna Savage X Fenty campaign for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is so important for people to see images that they can relate to and with many black women reluctant to talk about their cancer experiences, we hope that this campaign will help to start a very important dialogue.”

Traditionally the month of October is known as Breast Cancer Awareness month. This comes at a time when raising awareness is more important than ever, with statistics showing there to be around 55,200 new breast cancer cases in the UK every year. It is such a simple thing to check but many forget, or simply do not know what to look for.
The Pink Ribbon foundation said “Knowing what is normal for you and checking yourself regularly, means that breast cancer can be picked up earlier, giving a much better chance for the treatment to work”. The Pink Ribbon Foundation have supported the likes of Cancerkin, Farleigh Hospice, and Macmillan Cancer Support.
Throughout the month of October, in a string of campaigns, women (and men) are urged to check their breasts for the tell tale signs such as those listed below.

A portion of proceeds from the campaign will be going to the Clara Lionel Foundation which was founded in 2012 by Rihanna. The non profit organisation funds education and emergency response programmes around the world. The organisation have been known to support causes such as climate change.
