Ten things we can learn from drag queens

RuPaul’s Drag Race has risen in popularity since its first season in 2009. In the show, twelve of the best queens chosen by RuPaul herself all compete in a series of challenges to prove to the world they are the next drag superstar. As fun as it is to watch them lip sync for their lives and compete against each other in stupid challenges, there is a lot to be learnt from them.

1. Dresses must hit the floor

Dresses Must Hit The Floor

Dresses come in a variety of lengths but if there’s no volume to the bottom half, it should hit the floor. Stopping at or above the knees is fine but anything after that it needs to be a floor-length gown. But make sure it’s not too long because no one wants to snag their new dress because they are tripping over it all the time.

2. Cook your make-up

Cook

This is not in the literal sense so don’t get it on the hob. Apply your make-up in the most basic sense possible and let it cook. All you have to do is let it sit on your face before you do anything with it. This allows for easy blending as the make-up heats up with your core temperature and becomes more fluid and easier to manoeuvre.

3. BLEND

BLEND

When you’ve cooked and are ready to finish your look make sure you blend it out everywhere. There is nothing worse than seeing someone with a harsh foundation line on their neck. It just doesn’t look good, especially when it’s so easily avoided.

4. Ankle straps cut your leg off

Ankle Straps

It’s a known fact that if you wear a shoe with an ankle strap it makes you look shorter. Unless you have legs for days (legs that seem to go on forever), these should be avoided to elongate your legs and give the illusion of height.

5. No ratty extensions

No Ratty Extensions

As much as you hate your hair shorter, those ratty messy extensions you own need to go in the bin, unless they are real hair and you can actually sort them out. DiDa Ritz was queen of the ratty wigs and week after week she was critiqued on it. So don’t be a DiDa. Category is not cheesecake.

6. Accentuate your body

Accentuate Your Body

Nothing feels sexier than having curves and being proud of your body. I’m not telling you to buy a corset or anything, just always wear what makes you feel like you could be the next drag superstar.

7. Get your own signature scent

Scent

Just like the queens of season five that were forced to create their own perfume, you need to find yours. Whether it be the ever popular Mademoiselle by Coco Chanel or something a bit more kitsch, you just need a smell that makes people think of you when they get a whiff.

8. Be able to customise outfits

Customise

I don’t just mean add a belt to your outfit to cinch the waist. I mean full on cutting up, sewing or bejewelling a garment. Okay so I’m not expecting you to be like Bianca Del Rio (the goddess of sewing), but everyone can do a basic customisation that changes up an old lifeless outfit.

9. Learn to read

Read

I’m sure you all know how to read, but you might not know how to ‘read’. There are some hateful people out there so you can’t let them get you down. All you have to learn is to give it back just as hard as they do. Just keep a witty remark away for a time they try and put you down.

10. “If you can’t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?”

Amen

Can I get an amen?

So revise these ten rules and know your stuff because reading is fundamental.
