TREND ALERT: The return of the New Romantics style

One of the predicted trends for 2025/26 is New Romantics. The style originated in UK subcultures in the late 1970s and 1980s, with influences from glam rock and musicians such as David Bowie, and Adam and the Ants.

The name comes from the ‘Romanticism’ art movement in the early 20th century. It is reminiscent of Edwardian and Tudor silhouettes and detailing, pirate imagery and circus aesthetics.

Recently, pop-star Chappell Roan has been wearing New Romantic style outfits as she was spotted in vintage Jean Paul Gaultier to the 2025 Grammy’s and a bold blue, red and yellow military-inspired bodysuit to the Outside Lands 2024 Music Festival.

With her sudden rise to fame in the last year or so, she will inevitably become a huge trendsetter in 2025.

To achieve this aesthetic, focus on finding white shirts with frilly lace collars or large military uniform buttons, and combine with striped or plaid patterned blazers. It is a good idea to include star and heart imagery, sparkly costume jewellery, and camp eyeshadow and blush looks. The main colour combinations are bright primary colours, black and white, and silver or gold accents.
