5 defining trends for spring/summer 2021

Even if we are (still) in the middle of a global pandemic, the trends expected for the season ahead will not dampen your mood. The shows held last September in the four fashion capitals opted for digital showcases and a few Covid-secure shows sprinkled into the mix.

What should we expect this season? Clothing that has been adapted by the designers to accommodate our new working-from-home routine, the clear theme of comfort and sportswear with a touch of feminine glamour is likely to dominate the trends.

Underwear as outerwear

The mood for spring? Underwear as outerwear is the answer to our outfit dilemmas this season. Our need for comfort is a priority and dressing for our new at home routines can be done in style. Take inspiration from Dior, Etro and Alberta Ferretti and style patterned bralettes with high-waisted shorts like Dior and Etro, or belted with a mini skirt like Alberta Ferretti. The versatility of this trend is perfect for the warmer weather and is comfy for our at-home routine.

A monochrome moment

If the pandemic has proven anything it’s that we have stripped back and our no fuss working from home wardrobe is simple, filled with basics and easy to wear items. This new routine has affected the collections, the colours were straightforward and black and white were often seen together. At Chanel, a crisp white t-shirt was layered with a black skirt and mesh bottoms, while at Dolce & Gabbana, a chequerboard patchwork skirt co-ord was simple yet effective. At Giambattista Valli, black sequined shorts were styled with a white crop top with frill sleeves.

Let it flow

Comfort is at the top of everyone designers agenda this season, a no-fuss approach to eveningwear is what we’ve all needed. Floaty maxi dresses were romantic and elegant, at Valentino and Michael Kors the floor-sweeping and sheer styles came in muted tones of brown and tan. At Giambattista Valli we saw interesting necklines on black patterned dresses styled together with wrap-around heels and large bow ties.

Wide leg drama

Tight fitting trousers are so 2020! Swap out your slim fit jeans for a wide leg trouser in this straightforward approach to dressing. Wide leg trousers may not have the streamlining effect we are all after, but this trend for spring is elegant and will be your everyday trouser shape. At Louis Vuitton, Nicolas Ghesquiere brought loose fitted grey trousers styled with a graphic t-shirt and trench coat for the streetwear spin on the trend. But at Stella McCartney, it was all about tailoring, sharp cut cropped blazer was put together with matching baggy trousers which made for a powerful working from home look. At Chanel it was kept bold, powdered pink trousers was styled with a contrasting black bardo top with mesh sleeves and belted with Chanel’s classic chain belt with miniature Classic Flap bag.

It’s a wrap on spring dressing

Midriff flossing has likely to have already made its way onto your Instagram feed, the trend of crisscrossing cords, wraparound detailing have emerged onto the runway from your favourite designers in all forms from skirts, bralettes and maxi dresses. At Versace, Jacquemus and Michael Kors, the dental floss like detail was seen on maxi skirts covering the midriff.
