Styling Challenge at Smart Works

As part of our recent challenge, we had the opportunity to visit Smart Works, a charity organisation dedicated to supporting unemployed women by providing them with coaching, professional clothing, and the confidence they need to succeed in job interviews and transform their lives.

During the activity, we worked in groups to create two interview-appropriate looks for a hypothetical female client. Based on the client’s provided data and style preferences, our task was to source suitable outfits from the Smart Works stockroom. This experience not only enhanced our styling skills but also gave us valuable insight into the impactful work that Smart Works does to empower women entering the workforce.

The first look we created was for a woman in her fifties who preferred a beige-coloured suit for her interview. My group was in luck, as we happened to find a stylish beige suit in the shop with standout pocket flap detailing. We paired the suit with a white blouse featuring floral petals details at the top and flared cuffs. To complete the outfit, we added a classic black handbag for a polished and professional touch.

The second look was for Natalie, a woman in her thirties who had no specific colour preference but expressed a liking for patterns and flat shoes. We selected a bold floral shift dress, paired it with a white belt, silver jewelries  and added a geometric beige-and-black patterned handbag along with a pair of flats. This outfit aligned perfectly with Natalie’s preferences.

I particularly loved this look as it allowed us to challenge the styling skills we’ve been developing in this module. Rather than playing it safe, we pushed ourselves to style with the confidence of professional stylists. I’m truly over the moon about this one. So far, I’ve enjoyed every challenge in this module, and I’m excited to continue exploring and applying the styling skills I’ve gained in my future career.
