Hanifa launches 3D virtual catwalk on Instagram live

Coronavirus has been a very difficult and trying time, to say the least. But now we can see changes and eases in lockdown regulations and a dim light at the end of a very long tunnel. In the midst of the challenges we have all faced, catwalks have still gone ahead, but not as usual.

Usually, catwalks would be held with hundreds of guests and however many models added on top of that. Designer Anifa Wvuemba has given us a taste of what a post-pandemic catwalk might look like.

Hanifa showcased the collection on an Instagram live with 3D models. Invisible models of course put all the attention and emphasis on the garments making their way, like a ghost, down a virtual catwalk.

There is obviously a fear that supermodels will never have to strut down an aisle again which may be a good thing for designers. Virtual catwalks could potentially mean that anyone would be able to watch the show in real time like all the usual FROW guests. Online shows are also a cheaper alternative, it would mean that much smaller brands would be able to showcase their collections as well as the bigger more prestigious fashion houses.

Although there are many positives, there are also negatives, we would sadly miss out on the beautiful and extravagant catwalk shows from the likes of Chanel, Alexander McQueen and Rodarte. Catwalk shows are never just about the garments, if there was no model, how would we see accessories, or makeup and hair looks? Catwalks are all about being inspired but virtual catwalks could be the new norm.
