Who knew that even when repelling Covid-19 we are also having to fight against maskne!
Maskne, or mask- acne, is known as any breakouts of pimples and spots which are seen around the area where a face mask has been worn to protect against Covid-19.
This type of acne is surprisingly different to the usual acne you would be familiar with, as ‘maskne’, is a direct result of your skin being disrupted by the constant rubbing of material onto the skin.
Maskne is mainly caused by wearing your face mask for long periods of time where the material rubs against the skin, which then causes the environment inside the mask to become humid and damp.
The one question that everyone is asking at the minute is…. How on earth do you get rid of it?
Julie Barras, skincare specialist and salon owner of Sparkle Beauty in Low Fell, Gateshead, recommends a mixture of regular facial treatments or by using the right combination of skincare products to combat ‘maskne’.
She also says: “As well as the using the right combination daily cares for your skin, it is important to use an exfoliator at least once a week, this gets rid of dead skin cells and unclogs dirt trapped in open pores.” You can find different types of exfoliators, depending on your skin type and sensitivity online or on the high street.

Lloyds Pharmacy recommend a number of treatments and preventive measures you can take to minimise the annoyance of ‘maskne’ and also recommend using “non-comedogenic (pore-blocking) moisturisers underneath your mask and avoid wearing heavy makeup.”
Lloyds Pharmacy also recommend on their website to use the Cetaphil moisturising lotion, which is non-comedogenic (£5.65).
