The SS16 show for Tommy Hilfiger was truly a breath of fresh air, featuring a variety of pieces inspired by island life in the Caribbean. The collection featured loose, airy garments with lots of stripes and the classic Caribbean colours of red, green and yellow. Everyone stopped to take photos of the amazing set as they walked in; a wooden boardwalk surrounding a body of water complete with palm trees and even a beach hut. Models walked to the sounds of reggae which enhanced the inspiration behind the show, probably taken from Tommy Hilfiger’s own experiences as he has been a regular visitor to the isle of Mustique for the past 30 years.
The show started with pastel blues, debuting skirts and dresses with handcrafted mesh, lace and crochet details. As the looks descended, the colours became bolder but also extremely wearable, featuring silk bomber jackets suitable to throw over any of the outfits.
The models wore multi-coloured striped knitted bucket hats over their loose natural hair, showcasing crochet bikinis, thick-soled sandals and coloured mesh vests. The collection simply oozed the feeling of tropical life, giving a fun and playful edge to sundresses and long cover ups. Hilfiger reinvented his famous tracksuit by creating it in a deep burgundy red, complete with a blue leather waistband. Some of the models carried lust-worthy slouchy patchwork beach bags to complete their easy-going look.
Nearly all of the garments were given an original twist by having some lace or mesh detailing, adding to the laidback vibe of the entire show. The denim jacket made an appearance, but in a lighter shade with embellished sleeves in colours of the Caribbean. Tropical prints were of course found in the island life line-up, but re-born in amazing bold colours for trouser suits and floor-length dresses.
Gigi Hadid strutted down the runway alongside her sister Bella and Hailey Baldwin, splashing into the central lagoon for a finale with the fellow models who were dressed in bikinis, furthering the playful feel to the whole show and collection.
