Noooo 😢! Rumours of Zara opening in Newcastle are FALSE

Zara lovers will be disappointed to know that rumours of a store opening in Newcastle in April of the New Year are completely false.

The rumour of Zara replacing the 35,000sqft BHS store on Northumberland Street isn’t happening anytime soon. This was confirmed by Inditex, the worldwide fashion retailer that owns Zara, along with seven other brands such as Pull&Bear and Bershka.

Head of Corporate Affairs at Inditex, Julia Grindell said: “We are always on the lookout for new locations but at the moment we have nothing confirmed on Northumberland Street.”

Unfortunately for shoppers, this means Zara at intu Metrocentre will remain the only store in the North East for now and people will still have to commute to get their hands on Zara’s affordable luxury products.

With Newcastle City Council and brand partner NE1 Ltd working together to improve Northumberland Street, Zara could have been a great contribution to the City Centre for the people of Newcastle and visitors.

Tayla Jaye Kelsey, a trainee Mental Health Nurse at Northumbria University, who is also an advocate shopper at Zara said: “Student wise, if a store were to open on Northumberland Street it would be really convenient as a lot of student accommodation is central and we wouldn’t have to travel to Gateshead.

“It’s a popular store with products that are great quality and have affordable price tags. You can shop there and feel like you’ve bought a high-end designer label but still have money left in the bank.” Tayla continued to discuss that the Primark style prices are what attracts her to the store the most, as being a student you are always on a budget.”

Newcastle was voted favourite UK City in the Guardian in 2014 and continues to be a popular place with people around the region. Zara previously had a three-floor store that use to be situated in the same location but closed several years ago.

Hopefully with future improvements to Northumberland Street, Zara may re-evaluate and provide us with another store here in the North East. But for now the journey to intu Metrocentre will continue for the Zara lovers out there.
