Spring/Summer 2017 Trends: Blackout

Black may not be the most conventional colour for spring, but it is a noticeable favourite this season.

Spring fashion usually means bright colours, florals and whites. However, black unexpectedly dominated the runway cropping up in SS17 collections at Céline, H&M Studio, Isabel Marant, Loewe, Louis Vuitton, T by Alexander Wang, Valentino and more.

MAC140 TREND FORECAST SPRING BLACKOUT

Black is extremely chic and sophisticated. It’s a reliable go-to: it’s effortless, sharp and flattering to wear. Black is pretty much always on trend. This season it’s chicer in sheer jersey shirt dresses as seen at Céline, leather plunge vest tops at Valentino and contrasting stitched dresses at Loewe.

When wearing black in spring, it’s important to consider texture. Thick fabrics and heavier knits will be too warm and will make you look and feel weighed down. Keep the textures soft and light.

High street designers Zara and ASOS have got you covered with affordable catwalk style pieces. Zara have debuted a gorgeous black midi contrasting fabric dress – knit top with off-the-shoulder neckline and full flowing dress – in the SS17 campaign collection. And ASOS’s black minimal linen jumpsuit with an open back and scoop neck gives the trend a classy look.

It’s simple to refresh your black wardrobe pieces for spring. The trick is in the styling and accessories. Keep the underlying of the outfit black and accessorise with neutrals or bright colours. Add a statement coat or jacket or complement the dark colour with striking footwear like Italian it-girl singer-songwriter Patricia Manfield’s hot pink over-the-knee Balenciaga boots.

Luckily, when it comes to everyday, there’s little thought or stress needed when getting ready to wear black. It’s easy. Start with a little black dress or a tailored jumpsuit and add a colourful accessory like the Gucci-inspired buckle leather bag from Mango. Complete with black-framed sunglasses and a leather jacket to give your look an edge.

American teen drama television series, Riverdale has become extremely popular over the last couple of months and mystery-thriller television series Pretty Little Liars returns with its final 10 episodes on April 18. With the rise of these captivating murder mysteries it is no surprise that we turn to black to symbolise the mourning of our favourite fictional characters.

Take notes on how to wear this trend from Italian businesswoman and style influencer Chiara Ferragni as she wears the Versace colour curve blazer and colour curve formal pants with black barely there heels.

Don’t waste any time getting onboard with this trend. The beauty of black is that it flatters and even slims figures so is great for every body type and it suits every occasion. Lighten your look with fresh makeup or add a fuchsia or orange lip colour for brighter days ahead.
