Different writers from Fashion North will tell you about their wardrobe, how they style outfits and how you can replicate their look if you like what you see. This weeks Fashion North writer is Kelly Hepworth, our feature editor. Kelly is 5’9 and a size 10, Kelly’s mixes high street with designer and has been known to match her outfits with her dog.
“I wouldn’t say I have one particular style. I’m really lazy when it comes to getting ready. The amount of effort I put into getting ready really depends on what I’m doing on a particular day. Weekends and the days I’m at university get the most effort. I work for the Civil service on a Monday and Friday, visiting people to help them with their tax issues. Because this is face-to-face, I have to look professional. When I take my dog, Henrik, for walks I always end up filthy, so my usual ensemble for these muddy outings can only be described as farmer style. I live in flat shoes. The style of shoe may vary, but the lack of heel is one thing I don’t think will ever change.”
My Wardrobe:
“I share my wardrobe with the boiler which is less than convenient. I’m a bit of a hoarder so there are three vacuum bags full of things that ‘will come back in one day’, I tell myself. My shoes are kept in a few different places; a hanging shoe rack, a shoe storage bag, Ikea shoe storage boxes, and a box at the bottom of the stairs for the shoes I usually wear. I have a rack for scarves, and my bags are kept on a shelf in the wardrobe. Jeans and other things that don’t need ironing are kept in a set of drawers. And there is always an ironing pile in our spare room full of clothes I forget I have— because I don’t iron them.”
Styling tips:
“Being a 5’9 girl can often be hard, not all stores have a tall section and when they do, they’re not the best clothes. I seem to find Topshop and Asos offer a great selection of clothing that fit taller girls. A lot of my wardrobe is from these two stores. One look I think compliments my height, style and size is a fitted ankle grazing skirt, or midi skirt with a tucked in T-shirt. This look is great for tall people, it highlights your long legs but doesn’t make you look giant-like. Asos have a great range of maxi skirts, they also supply Motel Rocks which have a great range of skirts too, some of my favourites are the Asos Denim Mom Skirt, Motel Maxi Skirt with Split and Monki Wrap Front Maxi Skirt.“
I find the top half is often easier, for work I like to wear blouses and for weekends I usually wear T-shirts, Missguided have a great range of slogan T-shirts which work well with maxi skirts, they’re also easy to dress up or down, some of my favourites are the plain Boyfriend V Neck T-shirts which come in a few different colours, and their Basic T-shirt Slogan T-shirt, I like to keep the top half simple if you hadn’t guessed. I also find adding fun socks to an outfit can make you stand out a little bit more, I have an array of jazzy socks from sparkly to dinosaur socks – I love them. Topshop socks are probably my favourite, they have so many different patters from strawberries to lions. The Topshop socks are a little pricey though, so if you don’t want to spend too much try Primark, their Newcastle store has a massive range of novelty socks.”
