The rise in vegan-beauty: Our top five brands to follow on Instagram

As #crueltyfree exceeds over nine million posts on Instagram, it is clear awareness of animal-testing practices is rising, particularly within some of the industries biggest brands.

Many ethical beauty consumers agree that a product can only be described as ‘cruelty-free’ if it has not been tested on animals whatsoever. This includes the separate ingredients included in the product, the product as a whole and obligatory testing in other countries. Vegan makeup and skincare include absolutely no animal ingredients at all – common animal components include gelatine, beeswax and carmine, which is a red pigment that is extracted from cochineal beetles and is often found in lipsticks and blushers.

Many makeup artists, such as Justine Jenkins – whose clients include Suranne Jones and Fearne Cotton – now only use cruelty-free products when working. Thankfully with the number of vegan-beauty shoppers growing, the number of cruelty-free brands increase in correlation.
