Trend alert: utility

The utility trend was predicted to be big for the autumn/winter of 2014-15 after appearing on designer’s catwalks – like the cargo pants at Isabel Marant, the khaki pocketed jackets we saw from Hunter Original and the top to toe utility fabulousness from Balmain.

Admittedly, autumn is long gone and we’re coming to the end of winter (although with the weather we’ve been having lately it seems winter ain’t going nowhere), but this trend now seems to be popping up everywhere. The cover of this month’s Vogue (the March 2015 issue), features Brazilian model, Gisele Bündhen, channelling the utility look herself.

The high street stores and online retailers are also being updated with utility inspired items.

Topshop is a particular brand who’s New In section has been flooded with utility trend pieces. This structured moss-green playsuit (£50) is perfect to get that military look: it’s clean cut, practical and the metal D-ring adds an interesting detail.

If khaki isn’t your colour then this camel pelmet skirt (£35) could be for you. The A-line shape is flattering and the large pockets mean you can carry whatever you need to be prepared for impromptu battle. These coloured boots (£75) make a welcome change from the usual black boots we’re all so used to wearing and they’re 100% real leather so will be durable in case you get caught up in combat.

Daisy Street is another brand helping us channel our inner solider. Layer this sleeveless jacket (£29.99) over any outfit for an instant wardrobe update. It would also be a great transition piece to help get you from winter to spring. The oversized shirt (£22.99) is monochrome’s answer to camouflage, but will make you stand out in all the right ways. The T-shirt dress (£19.99) is casually cool, perfect for everyday, but the sheer panels also mean you could whip off your tights and you’d be evening ready too!
