The Met Gala took the world by storm on Monday night as celebrities rocked up to the red carpet in their campiest outfits, stealing the show with their avant-garde attire.
This year’s theme was Camp: Notes on Fashion and we’ve been picking out our favourite outfits of the night. First though, let’s go over who is in desperate need of a wardrobe change (don’t you look at me with that poker face, Lady Gaga).
Some celebs served royal realness whereas some just didn’t even plate. Though Ashley Graham was dressed clad head to toe in Gucci, we still feel like she could have given us more. The tailored mini shirt dress gave us a cute moment and we loved the combination of the reds and greens – but, we expected more from her (especially when you see the likes of Jeffree Star rolling out of bed wearing something like this).
However, we were massive fans of her green eyeliner. This pop of colour tied her whole look together, and we loved it.
The outfits of Kendall and Kylie Jenner caused a spark of conversation on social media as some fans jokingly compared them to the suits that Jim Carey and Jeff Daniels’ characters wore in the 1995 comedy Dumb and Dumber. Although the resemblance is uncanny, Kendall and Kylie’s flamboyant gowns lit up the red carpet with the vibrant and bold colour choices.
Zendaya (or should we say Zendayella?) was the embodiment of a contemporary Cinderella going to her ball. The grey elegance of her dress illuminated into a light, yet stormy, blue, and showed us that she did not need a man to accompany her. She even accidentally-on-purpose left a glass slipper on the red carpet that completed the fairy tale fantasy that we all wished we lived when we were younger.
From princesses to magic, Ezra Miller’s look was spellbinding. His striped suit elegantly led into a train that trailed gracefully behind him as he walked the red carpet and, for the entire night, eyes were quite literally all over him. Ezra Miller is the style icon that we all need in our lives. He wore multiple faces to the red carpet, which resulted in a fierce fashion face-off between him and Jared Leto, who also attended with a copy of his own head.
Jared Leto’s was not joking around during his entrance. Whilst the copy of his head is still freaking out the internet, fashion critics are busy fawning over the red tailored suit that screams fashion royalty.
This year’s Met Gala will not only be iconic because of the iconic outfits that were worn, but also because it was the first year that drag queens were allowed to attend. Aquaria and Violet Chachki dolled up in drag and hit the red carpet with the other attendees.
Both drag queens were winners of their seasons on RuPaul’s Drag Race and, despite the criticism that they received during their time on the show, they remained our favourite queens throughout their runs.
Aquaria wore an extravagant avant-garde look that pretty much came straight from the Parisian fashion house of Maison Margiela. The Garo Sparo gloves and the wig by the hair artist Joey George gave her look an extra oomph that fans and paparazzi alike all adored.
Violet Chachki, whose drag can nearly always be described as camp, turned up the volume and took her drag to the next level. Her sleek black dress fit her like a glove (pun intended) and gave off serious Jessica Rabbit vibes.
Lady Gaga, the queen of camp, gave us a show to remember. Gaga first arrived in a flamboyant fuchsia gown designed by Brandon Maxwell that drifted majestically behind her.
We soon found that this was nothing but a mere outer jacket when she removed this to reveal a beautiful black gown. Gaga accessorised this with golden lashes and a black umbrella to add another hint of camp to her entrance. The black gown was then pulled away to reveal the same vibrant fuchsia but as an elegant maxi dress.
Just when we thought that Gaga was finished, she came and smashed our expectations once again! For her fourth (and final) mid-red carpet change, she dropped the gown to reveal a set of black underwear.
If there was a competition for best dressed, Lady Gaga would have definitely claimed her prizes for all four of her fabulous looks.
