Best places to get Matcha in Sunderland

Matcha is fast becoming a staple drink to a growing number of people and if you’ve tasted the drink it’s easy to see why. Not only does it have a number of powerful health benefits like reducing depression symptoms, reducing cholesterol and reducing blood pressure just to name a few, it also tastes delicious. Sunderland is quietly becoming a matcha hotspot due to its wide range of offerings in and around the city. From hidden gems to the local legends we already know and love, here at Fashion North we’ve rounded up the best spots for you to get your matcha fix.

Café Floriana

Café Floriana is a brunch spot in Sunderland that serves everything from brunch and lunch plates to afternoon tea and speciality drinks. They serve a range of matcha drinks from hot matcha latte’s to iced versions perfect for the sunnier months. These drinks don’t just look amazing and super instagramable, they taste just as great as well. To add to their permanent menu, they also introduce weekly specials like this mango iced matcha they’ve had on the menu for the past week.

Love Lily

Love Lily has been a top brunch spot around Sunderland for a little while now serving all things sweet (and savoury) in their Roker and Herrington venues. They’re known for everything from their pancakes, cookies and stacked milkshakes to their USA breakfasts. They’ve now added matcha to their lengthy drinks menu, serving the drink in many different variations with specialty hot matcha’s including pistachio, white chocolate and many more. They also have specialty iced matcha latte’s including blueberry, strawberry, raspberry & white chocolate and mango & coconut.

Ashbrooke Home

Ashbrooke Home is a relatively new addition to the scene in Sunderland, they only opened their doors for the first time in March. Located within Mackies Corner, it might not be the first place you’d think of to find a matcha due to the fact it’s a home and lifestyle shop. However, in addition to this, they serve a range of drinks including herbal teas, hot chocolates, coffee and of course matcha lattes available both hot and iced and in a variety of different flavours.

Grinder Coffee

Grinder Coffee has been around in Sunderland since 2019 serving up everything from coffee to sweet and savoury treats, and now matcha. They serve the drink both hot and iced, and they’ve even added a limited edition variation of the drink to their spring menu, a banana Iced Matcha which is pictured below.

Mogi Cafe

Mogi Cafe is another recent addition to Sunderland that opened in March, helping to shape the matcha scene in the city. They serve a range of sweet, savouries and drinks including matcha lattes served both hot and iced. One of the specialty matcha’s featured on their menu is an iced strawberry matcha latte.

Coffee @ The Bothy

Coffe @ The Bothy have had matcha available on their menu for a little while now and you can get the drink either hot or over ice, whichever you prefer. if you like to add a little something to your matcha, they also have a strawberry iced matcha which is perfect to cool you down over the summer.

Otto

Otto is a coffee shop that’s been around for a while and they’ve expanded to serving matcha alongside their range of coffees, teas, frappes and more. Like most other places, Otto serve both hot and iced matcha lattes and you can add any of their range of syrups to your drink to give it a bit more flavour.

Ruhe Roker

Ruhe is a brunch spot located in Roker park that serves up everything from coffee to brunch and lunch items. Along with their range of drinks, they serve both hot and cold matcha with additional flavoured syrups you can add to suit anyone’s preference. Like many of the other places on this list, their specialty is an iced strawberry matcha which they’ve confirmed is the most popular menu item they’ve launched to date, pictured below.

Fausto coffee

Fausto Coffee is located on the seafront and they serve everything from coffee to pizza and even alcoholic beverages, serving as a coffee shop during the day and transforming into a bar at night. Matcha has been on their menu for a while now but they decided they wanted to up their game and have created an all new and improved matcha menu.
