Bottega Veneta: everything you need to know about this year’s fashion revival

One of the biggest dates in your fashion diary is fast approaching. One December 2, the winners of the prestigious Fashion Awards 2019 will be announced at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

One of this year’s most successful brands set to steal the night is Bottega Veneta.

As The Guardian revealed, The “Bottega effect” has been one of the year’s biggest fashion stories, with the brand’s woven leather sandals and handbags quickly becoming front-row catnip and fodder for high-street copies.

Their new British creative director Daniel Lee is up for three gongs – accessories designer of the year, British womenswear designer of the year and overall designer of the year – while the label has been nominated for brand of the year.  Ahead of the awards, Fashion North tells you everything you need to known about the man behind the magic and the history of the brand itself…

Who is Daniel Lee?

Daniel Lee is a Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design 2011 graduate. Since then he has worked for the some of the most iconic houses in the industry, such as Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Donna Karan. Most notably before joining Bottega Veneta, he held the role of director of ready-to-wear for Céline for seven years, leaving as one of Phoebe Philo’s infamous protégés.

Appointed to open a new chapter for Bottega Veneta, succeeding Tomas Maier. When speaking to Vogue magazine, Daniel Lee stated his mission at the fashion house is to “maintain the ingrained codes of the house – craftsmanship, quality and sophistication,” adding “I look forward to evolving what has gone before, while contributing a new perspective and modernity.”

The brand itself:

Bottega Veneta was founded in Italy in 1966 as a leather goods company by Michele Taddei and Renzo Zengiaro. Starting out as a specialised and handcrafted Italian brand, it has now skyrocketed to be become an iconic and premium luxury fashion house with global distribution. The atelier is best known for its signature Intrecciato woven leather, which is a technique still used by their artisan to make the leather in their products stronger and more durable.
