Corsets have been a fashion staple throughout the years, coming in and out of the mainstream as fashion changes and grows. From their origins to what they are now, they are still an item some people would love to have in their wardrobe.
They first originated in Crete and Greece as both men and women wanted a smaller waist. It has been shown, on ancient pottery, where the Minoan people wore leather belts and vests with leather rings and straps to help constrict their waists and give them the shape they wanted.
Corsets were almost forced upon people in the 1500s when Catherine de Medici (a french aristocrat) banned ‘thick waists’ at court. This saw a rise in wealthy women wearing them in public view and, this completely changed ‘fashion’ as the body was made to fit the clothing available rather than the opposite. With both men and women still wearing corsets across the western part of the globe, it was seen as a more luxurious piece of clothing to show off their wealth and class.
Fast forward to the 21st century, corsets are popular once again and are no longer seen as a sign of wealth but instead a fashion accessory that everyone wants to have. Even celebrities are getting in on the action such as Rihanna, Lizzo, and Billie Eilish who have all been seen wearing them at events, on the red carpet, and they have even been featured on the front cover of Vogue Magazine.

Billie Eilish has been known for wearing oversized clothing but shocked the world with her cameo on Vogue sporting a pink corset.
Corsets are once again in trend and have been for quite some time, with many designer brands such as Vivienne Westwood and Campbell jumping on the trend. This is attracting A-list celebrities to their designs but, is it just a matter of time till this trend fades away once again?
