Flannels hopes to be the anchor Sunderland needs to attract big retailers

July 1 marks the opening of Sunderland’s Flannels store on Fawcett Street. Flannels is the first luxury department store to open in the city and is expected to turn a lot of heads.

The Fawcett Street store has been empty for over two years since Primark vacated the premises, but the 16,000 square foot space has now been filled with luxury menswear and womenswear, not to mention premium footwear and accessories spread across two floors.

Marketing manager, Jenna Triscott said: “We’re really excited to be opening in the North East, we’ve had a good reaction so far. We’ve had so many people peering in, noses pressed up to the glass so we’re hoping for a good turn out.”

Jenna continued: “We just saw a gap in the market, certainly [in Sunderland] for the kind of product that we sell.”

“We have had a huge interest from press and local businesses. It was quite similar when we opened in Plymouth in February because there was not a store anything like Flannels, so it was really big news.”

Flannels are hopeful that the luxury store will be the hook Sunderland needs to attract more of the big high street retailers to the coastal city if the store is successful.

Following on from their VIP night yesterday, the store will open to the public at 9:30am July 1 and the store will be offering a £30 gift voucher when you spend over £150.

Sunderland marks the second opening for Flannels this year, following their launch into Plymouth in February. Flannels also have stores across the UK, in Liverpool, Manchester, Leeds, Birmingham, Nottingham and Cardiff.
